What Is Entity SEO?
An entity is the thing behind a name: one company, one person, one product, held as a distinct record rather than as a string of characters that happens to appear on a page. Entity SEO is the work of making sure a search engine or a model can tell which entity a name refers to, because a name that resolves to somebody else costs a company every mention built on it.
What is an entity, in search terms?
An entity is a distinct thing a system holds a record of: one organization, one person, one product, identified separately from the words used to refer to it. Google has publicly described organizing information around things rather than strings of characters, which is the same distinction stated from the other side. A string is what appears on a page. An entity is what the string refers to.
Ambiguity is what makes the distinction expensive. A single company name can belong to four unrelated businesses, and a machine reading a page has to decide which one a sentence is about before it can attach anything to it. Where that decision goes the wrong way, accurate pages accrue to somebody else's record, and the company is left with correct pages that nothing connects to it.
Why does a system need to identify an entity at all?
Answering a question about a company requires knowing which company. A system composing an answer has to gather claims from several sources, decide whether they describe the same subject, and reconcile them where they disagree. Without a resolved entity there is nothing to gather those claims onto, and the available fallback is to answer about the better-established thing with a similar name.
Consequences show up in ordinary search too, and usually earlier. A brand query that returns other companies is the visible form of the same failure, and it is the one a company notices first, because someone types the name and does not find the site.
What does entity SEO actually involve?
Four kinds of work, none of them exotic. Stating the identity in a machine-readable form on the site itself, so the pages declare what the organization is rather than implying it. Making the description consistent everywhere the company appears, because a system reconciling contradictory sources has more to work with when they agree. Connecting the parts of a site, its people, its offerings and its locations, to one identity rather than leaving them as unrelated documents. And earning enough independent corroboration that the record has more than one source behind it.
The last one is reached for last and needed most. Structured data on a company's own domain is a claim the company makes about itself. Independent corroboration is what turns a claim into a record, which is why entity work confined to a website tends to stall.
Where does structured data fit?
Structured data is the most common way of stating an identity in machine-readable form, and its limits are documented rather than debatable. Google's own guidance says structured data does not guarantee a ranking, and its guidance for generative search features says no dedicated markup is required for them. What markup removes is ambiguity about what a page is describing, which is worth doing on its own terms and is not a lever on an answer.
How is it different from keyword-based SEO?
Keyword work asks which words a page should compete for. Entity work asks which thing the page is about, and whether a machine can tell. A page can be optimized for every relevant phrase and still fail to establish who is behind it, which is a different failure with a different fix.
The two also fail at different points. A keyword problem shows up as a page ranking below where it should. An entity problem shows up as the right company never being the subject of the answer at all, or being described using facts that belong to a different business with a similar name.
How is it measured?
Four checks, all observable from outside. Whether an exact-phrase search for the name returns the company or returns something else. Whether descriptions of the company across independent sources agree with each other and with its own site. Whether structured data on the site is present, valid and actually connected across pages rather than repeated on each one. And whether systems asked about the company return facts that belong to it.

On the day this site launched, an exact-phrase search for the company name returned other businesses entirely, and a bare-word search treated the name as a misspelling of an older one. What usually goes wrong?
Reaching for markup first is the standard mistake, and an understandable one, because markup is the part a company can change on a Tuesday. Markup states a claim on the domain that is already the least independent source available. Where the ambiguity is held in place by older, better connected entities, nothing added to the company's own pages reaches it.
Inconsistency is the second failure, and it is usually accidental. A company described one way on its site, another way in a directory, and a third way in an old announcement gives a system three candidate records and no basis for choosing between them. Cleaning that up is unglamorous, and it is the cheapest work on this list.
Assuming the fix is fast is the third. How long any system takes to update a record it holds about a company is not published, and it depends on sources that update on their own schedules. The honest expectation is that entity work is slow, that progress is read from repeated measurement rather than from a single confirmation, and that nobody outside the provider can state the interval in advance.
